A Helsinki villager around the year

Post by zizu » 01 Nov 2012 20:56

Eventbrite.com

BEST https://www.best.eu.org/index.jsp
http://www.stadion.fi/tapahtumat

Finland young professionals, Luetaan yhdessä, Aalto women in business, Women in tech活动等。

活动预报可以在赫村旅游办visithelsinki.fi 的What's On - Events in Helsinki里面找到。当天的活动可以在stadissa.fi 看。大型室内活动在messukeskus.com, kaapelitehdas.fi, hartwallarena.fi, 小众文化和音乐korjaamo.fi, 食品节目teurastamo.com 和torikorttelit.fi 。

http://www.vihreatsylit.fi/en/

http://satokartta.net

Helsinki is a farm, here live all kinds of animals who truly enjoy their lives through 3-4 months of summer followed by 8-9 months of winter. Note, spring or autumn do not actually exist, they are just poetic creations in the Finnish vocabulary.

As a Chinese student, here are what you could do as a Helsinki villager around the year. Don't rush to milking the Finnish cows, Valio will do it.

If you arrived in Helsinki in August, it is either a lucky hit or a misfortune. The good side is, you start with the best month of Helsinki. The bad side is, all that follows this month is just worse and worse, all the way until May next year.
August
Helsinki City Marathon: The biggest city marathon event in the world! Sometimes we have Chinese students there too - or join the run yourself. http://www.helsinkicitymarathon.fi
Flow festival is grass-root, street-styled. Tickets may be hard to get, but grab the mood even though you can only watch it afar! http://www.flowfestival.com
The Helsinki Festival is a bit of higher taste, offering lots of classic music with guests from abroad. For those with student price, they can be very accessible. http://www.helsinkifestival.fi
Must do: Shut down your computer and go out when it is the Night of the Arts. Traditionally we call those who stay at home during this night "pork of the day" at CSSA-Espoo. So don't let us find you available online.

September
Helsinki Design week: Bring your open attitude and see everyday objects from a different angle. If you are lucky, what you bought on this day may become very valuable in 20 years. http://www.helsinkidesignweek.com
Siivouspäivä: a good day to buy second hands from anyone! http://www.siivouspaiva.com
Helsinki International Film Festival: depending on your interests, you may like this one or not http://www.hiff.fi
Open House Helsinki: http://english.openhousehelsinki.fi/ This is an international event which opens up spaces which are normally closed to public.
...[Helsinki welcome weeks brings numerous opportunities to learn about the services offered by the local public sector. There are also performances and events which you can attend and win prizes. http://www.welcomeweeks.fi]...Looks like this event has been cut due to government budget cuts since 2015.

October
How about an opera in the National Opera house? Finnish schoolmates are busy dressing up in tailcoats for their annual parties, while you can taste something high-class without strong alcohol as well. Students enjoy half-price and the Finnish opera is of very high quality and really cheap. http://www.opera.fi
The Finnish national opera may also offer free concerts called Music in the Foyer, so pay attention to their website.
On the other hand, don't forget the Music Center often offer free concerts! Keep an eye on its website http://www.musiikkitalo.fi

November
Ever been to a real circus before? Otaniemi parties do not count. Try the Finnish national circus once! http://www.sirkusfinlandia.fi
Consider going to ice-hockey match at least once during your time in Finland. Ice-hockey is fast-paced and fierce. If you find football boring, this may be your cup of tea!
If you never liked Ballet, maybe you should try it without knowing it. Children-friendly ballets are on every year in December in the Finnish national opera, the dance and the music will bring you back to your childhood. Buy tickets early as they are really popular and always sold out.

December
Exams and trip to Europe.
If you plan to visit your parents in China, buy a lot of Fazer in the supermarket, the airport price is twice of that.
There is a Christmas Market in Esplanade but you might be much more interested in the Taik student Christmas market.

January
Go out into the coldness and darkness, there is Lux Helsinki, outdoor lighting art for the darkest month of the year. http://www.luxhelsinki.fi
Consider going for skating on the sea? Otherwise there's really nothing else to do this month, and Finns just get pissed.

February
Consider going for skiing? Really nothing else to do and Finns just...
Check out for Event Cinema in http://www.finnkino.fi and you might find your favorite classics through satellite live transmissions from New York and London, cheaper than watching live shows in the Finnish National Opera.

March
Find a day to visit the Finnish national museum Ateneum. You may not understand oil painting, but you can surely see the difference of air, sunshine and water painted in Finland compared to what were painted in Italy.
If you plan to visit China during the summer, keep a high inventory of the Fazer chocolate egg (once a gift to the Russian Tsar) as they will not be available in the summer.

April
This month is full of student events that all others can be ignored.
On April 30, follow the Finnish students to worship the naked Havis Amanda.
If you happen to pass by bakery Eromanga, ask for liihapiirakka and munkki. http://www.eromanga.fi/toimipisteemme

May
Vappu picnic in any Helsinki park. Return early as Finns usually get really drunk and might start doing stupid things.
World Village is an opportunity to see multi-cultural performances, and what's better, it takes place after exam period. The event is not purely cultural, sometimes stained by useless activitists. http://www.maailmakylassa.fi
On a week day, visit Cafe Ekberg for breakfast until 10:30. Now you are like a Swedish-speaking Finnish grandma! http://www.cafeekberg.fi/cafeekberg/breakfastbuffet
During this month there will be the International Museum day, on which many museums are for free http://network.icom.museum/international-museum-day

June
Have you got a summer job? Time to reward your hard work during the past year, try one of the relatively high-end restaurants.
Helsinki Samba Carnaval is a weekend to see some feathers and some really hot ladies http://www.samba.fi
Helsinki day is celebrated annually on June 12th and programmes are published on its website http://www.helsinkipaiva.fi/en
Watch the bonfire in Seurasaari for the mid-summer festival.
Helsinki Pride Week: As one of the most gay-friendly capitals in the world, Helsinki brings you the six-color flags in a huge parade. Feel free to join the 19000 visitors! http://www.helsinkipride.fi

July
Picnic in Suomenlinna island - and watch the tourists crowds, you are a real Helsinki villager now!
Don't forget to bring some cash and try the ice-cream from Helsingin jäätelötehdas! Find their shops in http://www.helsinginjaatelotehdas.fi
Some free concerts may be going on in Kaivopuisto this month, don't stay at home.
Invite someone for a date in the Green house of the Kaisaniemi Botanic Garden, student price is cheap. http://www.luomus.fi/english/exhibitions/botanicgarden/

Ad-hoc events:
If your student union organizes some kind of protest in front of the Finnish Parliament, as long as you do not feel the topic is harming you, do join them. This is traditionally a type of out-door party, they may combine it with sauna and beer-drinking.
Restaurant day: a couple of times a year you can find pop-up restaurants, anyone can sell their food. Some one-day chef can be really good http://www.restaurantday.org
Skating on the sea, but pay attention to safety.
Fazer chocolate factory trip: Student organizations organize such trips, free chocolate and gifts!
Cruise to romantic Sweden: 此处应该强行插入大姨妈的芬瑞邮轮一夜情指南 to see the better country on the other side.
Rantaraitti walk, Laajalahti walk:
